Balboa Park

Balboa Park, a historic cultural landmark in the heart of San Diego, blends lush gardens, expansive green spaces, and iconic destinations such as world-class museums, historic theaters, and the San Diego Zoo. As one of the nation’s oldest recreational sites, first designated as public land in 1835, it now welcomes over 10 million visitors annually. To enhance navigation across the vast park, RSM Design was engaged to develop a clear and cohesive wayfinding system. After conducting a thorough site analysis, the team streamlined messaging, refined typography and color for readability, and introduced district identifiers to improve orientation. The resulting signage guidelines elevate the visitor experience while honoring the park’s civic and cultural significance.

San Diego’s ever-changing, always amazing, 1,200-acre backyard.

BALBOA PARK BOTANICAL BUILDING

RSM Design developed an integrated donor recognition and wayfinding program for the renovated Balboa Park Botanical Building, subtly embedding donor names into planters, fountains, benches, and pathways to honor contributors while preserving the site’s natural beauty and historic character.
