Santa Monica Place

Steps away from the beach and the iconic Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica Place is anchored by an array of the city’s best retail amenities. Notably, Santa Monica Place was one of the first works of architect Frank Gehry and his first shopping mall. The luxury destination offers several premier shops, restaurants, and entertainment experiences. A haven for both locals and tourists, the space needed a comprehensive wayfinding signage program to ease navigation for guests as well as provide a cohesive design aesthetic. RSM Design joined the team to craft environmental graphics that integrate seamlessly with the modern, vibrant retail destination.

Establishing the Design Character

The design character is inspired by Southern California culture, both as a retail destination, as well as a place of rest and rejuvenation. The wayfinding signage seeks to integrate with the various architectural elements found throughout the project to simplify and ease navigation while working to warm up the space and add vibrancy. By using these different styles and design components, Santa Monica Place is able to embrace the authenticity of the existing historic site while creating a unique design character that is both distinctive and integrated into the surrounding Los Angeles urban community.
